Macau 2009

Decided to make a separate folder for this trip with Melissa what with all the time it's taking me to upload our photos in one folder and my Vaio crashing, this New year's eve should really be put to good use.

Was really looking forward to this leg of our trip -- Macau with its Portuguese influence, casinos and Pinoys all over.

HK and Macau, 2009

Hatched the idea to travel with Melissa and Leo last May while celebrating her birthday at Casa Armas in Trinoma. Booked our flight tickets after our dinner celebrating my birthday at Le Maison also in Trinoma this time minus Leo.

Our last trip together was in Sapporo 2007. Hong Kong was supposed to serve as our entry for the Beijing train adventure but we didn't get the Chinese visa - hated queuing at the consulate in Makati. We ended up staying in the city for 7 days. Highlights include:
1) me having an anxiety attack on the fist day thinking that Melissa might suffocate and die because of the dust mites in our room at the Chungking Mansion;
2) almost buying a fake camera (didn't know they also sell it in reputable looking stores near the mansion);
3) Melissa having an anxiety attack too before going back due to a certain "speedy Louis" =)

Shows I watch

These are the shows that I am really into these days.... I lose sleep over them.  I get cranky in the morning or every time I missed an episode or re-runs.  I "google"  every information about them.  Translation - I'm obsessed with them.
Glee - there wasn't really any hype when this show started.  I got intrigued because the cable channel Jack TV advertised they'll be showing it ahead of the free tv Etc.  So I tuned in.  At first I found the concept - well, tacky kinda if High School Musical is for tweens, this one's for the real teens.  Then, I got intrigued with Kurt's love of fashion (bullying is fine as long as they don't touch his Marc Jacobs jacket), Rachel Berry's sticker star after her name and her singing Lea Salonga's audition piece for Ms. Saigon - "On My Own." Finn's rendition of REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling" while in the shower.  I love the songs in the series!
Top Chef - I have seen the previous seasons but not really watch all the episodes.  But when I saw Dale Talde - a Pinoy chef in NYC prepared a halo-halo inspired dessert and got praises from the judge - I made this my Wednesday night date.  Now, they have a new batch of NYC chefs.  I'm looking out for the two Europeans (Stephan and Fabio), Jeff (from Ritz Carlton and definitely the cutie of the batch) and Eugene (haven't figured out if he's of Pinoy origin too but his bio says he's Hawaiian.  On the first or second elimination, Ariane - twice in the chopping block - lamented that she's supposed to be the one eliminated and Carla said the line, "There is no mistake in the universe....You deserve to be here."  Those lines set me up for another Wednesday nights of watching this show.
Project Runway Philippines - I am really a fan of the original one - hosted by Heidi, Nina Garcia, Michael Kors and Tim Gunn but shunned the first season of the Pinoy version.  Then I got a text from Ma-an, one of the models, and watched the first episode really for her.  I think her designer got eliminated on the second or third episode and I was really bent on giving this up because it conflicts with the Top Chef's first airing.  Probably the remote control did it - I'm monet and I'm a trigger happy with the TV remote.... Suddenly, Ma-an came back to the show- I missed that portion but I'm still watching the show and designers are now down to four - Manny, Santi, Cherry and Russell.  I want Russell to be out.  Among the remaining three I'm really for Kuya Manny but wouldn't mind if Santi or Cherry wins.
How I Met Your Mother - Doogie Howser, aka Neil Patrick Harris plus the NYC setting and great comedy.  What can I say?  I missed out on Friends -wasn't really a fan - was too busy watching telenovelas that time....
Professional, Cool Japan, Japanese Kitchen, Tokyo Fashion Express, NHK Special - just to practice with my Japanese (hehehe!  all these shows are in English).
Arirang's Showbiz Extra - BJ (Before Japan or pre 2005), I was a big Kdrama fan.  Ask everyone, I was one of the ambassadors of the Korean culture with my set of friends and office mates....I bought all those drama CDs and was active at forums or discussion boards on Korean entertainment.  So just to keep abreast of what's happening on Korean entertainment.  BTW, Adrien Lee, one of the hosts, speaks French.
You're Beautiful - Hana Kimi and Coffee Prince rolled into one idol version plus more fun and comedy.  The cuties are a bit changed too - metro-sexual idol groups.  Kame, Jun and Ryo but they're in one group and are Korean - so a little toned down....
IRIS - Lee Byung Hun, Jung Jun Ho, Kim Seung Woo.  Hey, if you're into korean entertainment late 90s to early 2000 these three are SERIOUS reasons to tune in and endure.  Good thing LBH on his own sizzles even with the Michael Bay or James Cameron-like plot and production.
Smile, You - Lee Min Jung, the other girl (Shigeru's role in hana Yori Dango) in Boys Over Flowers and Jung Kyung Ho, the other guy in Time Between Dog and Wolf and I'm Sorry I Love You are now the leads.  Got intrigued because of these two leads but as this is a weekend drama and may stretch to 50 plus episodes - I'll probably drop this and just wait for the ending on Mysoju.
Otomen - started watching this mid summer of 2009 and the drama will air until the fall season.  The lead character is a Kendo national champion but loves to read shojo manga and is very skilled in cooking and sewing. Discovered Okada Masaki here,

Evangeline Ophelia M. Robles

Victoria calls her "Eva" as in Eva Longoria
Patricia and the rest call her Baby Buddha.
Itus told me to call her "our nanay"  (she was named after her two grandmothers but of course for Itus, Ipeng and me her "Ophelia" name is really a tribute to our nanay).
The new bunso as Ipeng tells everyone - Evangeline Ophelia (b. April 9, 2009, London UK), the prettiest among Itus' daughters.

Now it's Melissa's turn

Funny how the word "fate" seems to work... Less than a month after I learned and posted here that Lea's going to the Netherlands, I got a phone call from Melissa telling me the same message - she's going to the Netherlands too!  Not to see the windmills, buy diamonds or smell the tulips.  Starting January 2010, she'll be in Van Gogh's birthplace on a PhD scholarship in Social Sciences.
Mighty proud of her - I used to see her as my "mom" in Japan.  Nova even said that she allowed me to play and live contentedly in Japan.  I'm pretty glad that we both seized the opportunity to live apart on our last year in Kobe.  This allowed our relationship to evolve and we gradually became "sisters."   The past two years since we got back, I definitely took a back seat as Leo, Ading and Baby 2 (well, along with Mommy, Daddy, Reng-reng, Kuya Dilbert even Ate Bell and Ate Kulot) claimed her back. I don't mind at all. In fact, I'm just too happy to think of her as my girlfriend!
Congratulations to my mom-sister-girlfriend!  Come back and inspire Ading, Baby2 and me with your PhD diploma and a job in an international organization - still and definitely helping the vulnerable sector!

Lea's going to the Netherlands

Been meaning to post something about Lea's graduate scholarship to ITC in the Netherlands from 2009 to 2011.  She's really looking forward to finally getting the chance to study abroad for her masters degree!
I woke up very early and checked if MTV Philippines has stopped with the all-Michael Jackson programming.  They had and saw Jewel's video of Stronger Woman.  Here's part of the lyrics:
But not tonight
'Cause come the morning light, oh
I'm gonna love myself more than anyone else
Believe in me, even if someone can't see
The stronger woman in me

I'm going to be my own best friend
Stick with me till the end
Won't lose myself again, never, no,
'Cause there's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman in me

Light bulbs buzz,
I get up
And head to my drawer
I wish there was more
I could say
Another fairytale fades to gray
I've lived on hope
Just like a child
Walking that mile
Faking that smile
All the while
Wishing my heart had wings

Well tonight, I'm going to be
The kind of woman I'd want my daughter to be, oh

I'm gonna love myself more than anyone else
Believe in me, even if someone can't see
There's a stronger woman in me
I'm gonna be my own best friend
Stick with me till the end
I won't lose myself again, never, no
'Cause there's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman

This is me, packing up my bags
And this is me, headed for the door
And this is me, the best you ever had
I'm going to love myself
More than anyone else
Believe in me even if someone cannot see
There's a stronger woman in me
I'm going to be my own best friend
Stay with me till the end
Won't lose myself again, never, no
'Cause there's a stronger woman
A stronger woman
There's a stronger woman,
A stronger woman in me,
Yeah...
Enjoy being a student again, Lea!
I intentionally cut the first stanza and here's the mp3 of the song:

Five things I learned from Pa and Lolo Jose

Father's Day 2009 and I would like to remember Lolo Jose and honor our tatay's through their words of wisdom.
1.  Pa - Always buy good pairs of shoes, they'll last longer.
2.  Pa - Think twice before blowing your own horn, be humble always.
3.  Pa - "Ang utang ay utang, ang bigay ay bigay, ang hingi ay hingi (A loan is a loan, a gift is a gift and a dole out is a dole out)," always remember the difference.
4.  Lolo Jose - Better not start a task unless you'll put 100% of your effort, try to perfect a job or a skill.
5.  Lolo Jose - Honor your commitments, be responsible to your younger siblings.

From Godhand Teru

This season, I'm only watching one jdorama - Godhand Teru.  It's a medical drama and stars my favorite Hiraoka Yuta - miss those Aeon posters in JR and Hankyu eki's. On the 4th episode, the medical director of the hospital uttered something about absolute destiny. Been meaning to post it here but things come up and I got lazy the past few weeks.  Anyway, here it is:

ABSOLUTE DESTINY
No matter how confident you are in your abilities,
In the end what it comes down to is the power to believe -
the power to believe you'll succeed.
If you have that the results will be better.

Pining

for these boys .....

The series that made me go back to watching kdramas ended this week.  Since January, I waited patiently for the subbed version on all the streaming sites; stayed up late Monday nights and woke up very early Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings; stalked all the forums and fan sites on Lee Min Ho and the the two Kims (Bum and Joon), even Kim Hyun Joon.  I'm not sure if I'll continue watching another kdrama for Spring 2009 but for now, I'm scouring the net for the OST - just so I can have more of my boys....

Downtime

Let's see, ever since I can remember I look forward to the time in a week when I don't have to think about school, then work and now obligations.  I used to think that Saturdays was my downtime.  Even though I wake up early, I have the option of not getting up - reading books, watching television or surfing the net.
I used to welcome being sick because this is the time when I can concentrate on reading boring books.  I think, I was able to finish Brother's Karamazov, Crime and Punishment and yes, Northanger Abbey because I had the flu.
Holy week is also a traditional downtime - I remember "marathoning" a whole season of Seventh Heaven, Jack and Jill and Young Americans (all Studio 23 programs) years ago.  This is also the time when I get to eat lots of frozen singkamas (jicamas, well I thought all the while the English term is turnip but after googling - turned out it's jicamas).  One holy week too, I cleaned out the closet - gave away shirts, shoes, and stuff that I haven't used for a year.  Sometimes, I do this in December when I use up all my vacation leave and pretend I'm still a student enjoying my Christmas break.
Downtime in Japan is always Saturdays.  I don't do anything - wake up around 10 or 11 a.m., drink milk for breakfast and forego eating lunch until 2 or 4 in the afternoon.  Then, just choose between surfing the net or watching re-runs of Japanese dramas.  Laundry is done on Sundays after going to church and malling with Melissa or just plain hanging out with Mina.
Just this morning, I realized after flipping through cable channels, drinking coffee and surfing the net - Sunday has become my downtime.  On this day, I've discovered BBC programs like Nobel Minds, The Story of Maths and now Tropic of Capricorn.  Come to think of it, updating this blog has also been one of those downtimes.....

Hyogo, Spring 2007

A week after coming back to Kobe from NYC, Mina and I joined a hiking tour and caught up with a group of regular hikers. Pictures are from Mina's camera.

Then, also during that season - finally went to the Nada sake museum and shops. It was fun - should have brought Santa and Kiril here - the museum tour is for free and we got to sample the sake - oishii!, ;)

Christmas 2008

Got all these from the Christmas card that Ipeng sent just last month. Pretty proud of my nieces' art so, I'm posting Victoria's art project. Not sure if Mandy drew a self-portrait or Patricia drew it for her but I'm positive whoever did this will have a great future if she decides to pursue art....

Backstory of Flight 1549

This story came after President Obama's historic election.  I'm posting it here so that I can go back and re-read an example of a really inspiring story.  As this pilot said during a ceremony commemorating his and the crew's bravery, "...we were simply doing the jobs we were trained to do..."  Brief and eloquent words from a real PROFESSIONAL,

Controller thought plane that ditched was doomed

  • By JOAN LOWY and MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN, Associated Press Writers Joan Lowy And Michael J. Sniffen, Associated Press Writers Tue Feb 24, 4:09 pm ET
Air Traffic Control Specialist Patrick Harten, right, is all smiles as US AP – Air Traffic Control Specialist Patrick Harten, right, is all smiles as US Airways flight 1549 Capt. …

WASHINGTON – The air traffic controller who handled Flight 1549 thought ditching in the Hudson River amounted to a death sentence for all aboard. Now the veteran pilot who pulled off the feat safely says harsh pay cuts are driving experienced pilots from the cockpit.
"People don't survive landings on the Hudson River," 10-year veteran controller Patrick Harten told the House aviation subcommittee Tuesday in his first public description of how he tried to land the jetliner that lost power in both jets when it hit Canada geese after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia Airport.
"I thought it was his own death sentence," Harten said of the moment when US Airways pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger radioed that he was going into the river. Defying the odds, Sullenberger delicately glided the Airbus A320 down in one piece and all 155 people aboard survived the Jan. 15 water landing.
Sullenberger, a 58-year-old who joined a US Airways predecessor in 1980, and his copilot, Jeffrey B. Skiles, told the panel that experienced pilots are quitting because of deep cuts in their pay and benefits.
Skiles said unless federal laws are revised to improve labor-management relations "experienced crews in the cockpit will be a thing of the past." Sullenberger added that without experienced pilots "we will see negative consequences to the flying public."
Harten, the 35-year-old controller, riveted the hearing with his account of the 3.5 minutes during which he spoke with the crippled jetliner after the bird strike at an altitude of 2,750 feet.
When Sullenberger said he couldn't make it either back to LaGuardia or to Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and would ditch in the river that separates New York and New Jersey, Harten testified, "I believed at that moment I was going to be the last person to talk to anyone on that plane alive."
But Sullenberger safely glided the jetliner into the water near ferry boats that picked the passengers off the plane's wings before it sank in icy waters.
Harten, who has spent his entire career at the radar facility in Westbury, N.Y., that handles air traffic within 40 miles of three major airports, struggled vainly to help guide the airliner to a landing strip.
In lightning-quick decisions, Harten communicated with 14 people after the bird strike to divert other airplanes and advise controllers elsewhere to hold aircraft and clear runways for 1549.
First, Harten tried to return the plane to LaGuardia, asking the airport's tower to clear runway 13. But Sullenberger calmly reported: "We're unable."
Then Harten offered another LaGuardia runway. Again, Sullenberger reported, "Unable." He said he might be able to make Teterboro.
But when Harten directed Sullenberger to turn toward Teterboro, the pilot responded: "We can't do it .... We're going to be in the Hudson."
"I asked him to repeat himself even though I heard him just fine," said Harten. "I simply could not wrap my mind around those words."
At that moment, Harten said he lost radio contact with flight and was certain it "had gone down."
"During the emergency itself, I was hyper-focused," Harten said. "I had no choice but to think and act quickly and remain calm. But when it was over it hit me hard."
Harten was replaced at the radarscope after the plane went down. Isolated down the hall, Harten thought the worst had happened. "It felt like hours" before he learned everyone survived.
Afterward, Harten told his wife, "I felt like I had been hit by a bus."
Sullenberger testified that his pay has been cut 40 percent in recent years and his pension has been terminated and replaced with a promise "worth pennies on the dollar" from the federally created Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. These cuts followed a wave of airline bankruptcies after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks compounded by the current recession, he said.
He said the problems began with deregulation of the industry in the 1970s. Then "the bankruptcies were used by some as a fishing expedition to get what they could not get in normal times," Sullenberger said of the airlines.
The reduced compensation has placed "pilots and their families in an untenable financial situation," Sullenberger said. "I do not know a single professional airline pilot who wants his or her children to follow in their footsteps."
Sullenberger himself has started a consulting business to help make ends meet. Skiles added, "For the last six years, I have worked seven days a week between my two jobs just to maintain a middle class standard of living."
Investigators have found remains of Canada geese in both engines of Flight 1549.
Sullenberger and Skiles said bird strikes are common but this one was exceptional in knocking out both engines. This "was a bigger bird than I've ever hit before," Skiles said.
The bird problem has been growing. Since 1990, the number of Canada geese that live year-round in the country rather than migrating has grown from 1 million to 3.9 million, John E. Ostrom, chairman of the Bird Strike Committee-USA, testified.
Mark Reis, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport managing director, said radar being testing at his airport can detect birds but the ability to process the information quickly enough to help pilots won't come "any time soon."

Thanh Ha's New Baby

Got the good news from Thanh Ha-san - she gave birth to a baby boy!  Read her e-mail last week and almost failed to download this picture.  She said she gained weight. Well she still looks the same, in fact she looks like she's just taking care of her baby brother.  I told her all about our trip in Vietnam and how much I loved their iced coffee and how thankful I am that she thought me the secret in making them while we were in Kobe - well, really it was iced tea with milk, but I'd like to think the same thing applies to coffee,
Here she is with her new baby -

and here we were three years ago in Kobe:

Now, I'm wishing I can answer her mail with "interesting" pictures and "nice" updates but I guess I have to settle for a picture with Melissa or maybe the one where I was part of a bridal entourage... bummer!

Boys Over Flowers

Just when I'm thinking of completely giving up on watching kdramas - they came up with their version on HYD.  With two episodes already shown - I must say that I'm hooked.  Well, I would have stayed even if the version completely sucks.  I'm glad that I don't have to endure that because this has 24 episodes.  Guilty though of  preconditioning my mind that they couldn't make anything better from the 2005 Japanese version.  More surprising is that in the Taiwanese and Japanese versions, I'm a Hua Ze Lei/Hanazawa Rui fan.  In fact, it took the rain scenes in both versions before I even accepted Dao Ming Si/Domyouji Tsukasa.  Here in BOF, I took an immediate liking to this character just when he was introduced:  Gu Jun-pyo
